Braid Group Actions via Categorified Heisenberg Complexes

We construct categorical braid group actions from 2-representations of a Heisenberg algebra. These actions are induced by certain complexes which generalize spherical (Seidel-Thomas) twists and are reminiscent of the Rickard complexes defined by Chuang-Rouquier. Conjecturally, one can relate our complexes to Rickard complexes using categorical vertex operators.

Entropy and mixing for amenable group actions

For Γ a countable amenable group consider those actions of Γ as measurepreserving transformations of a standard probability space, written as {Tγ}γ∈Γ acting on (X,F , μ). We say {Tγ}γ∈Γ has completely positive entropy (or simply cpe for short) if for any finite and nontrivial partition P of X the entropy h(T, P ) is not zero. Our goal is to demonstrate what is well known for actions of Z and ev...

Tate Cohomology of Framed Circle Actions as a Heisenberg Group

The complex Mahowald pro-spectrum CP∞ −∞ is not, as might seem at first sight, self-dual; rather, its natural dual is its own double suspension. This assertion makes better sense as a claim about the Tate cohomology spectrum tTS defined by circle actions on framed manifolds. A subtle twist in some duality properties of infinite-dimensional projective space results, which has consequences [via w...

Tate Cohomology of Circle Actions as a Heisenberg Group

We study the Madsen-Tillmann spectrum CP∞ −1 as a quotient of the Mahowald pro-object CP∞ −∞ , which is closely related to the Tate cohomology of circle actions. That theory has an associated symplectic structure, whose symmetries define the Virasoro operations on the cohomology of moduli space constructed by Kontsevich and Witten. 1. Tate cohomology of circle actions 1.1 If E is a geometric bo...

Mixing Actions of the Rationals

We study mixing properties of algebraic actions ofQ, showing in particular that prime mixing Q actions on connected groups are mixing of all orders, as is the case for Z-actions. This is shown using a uniform result on the solution of S-unit equations in characteristic zero fields due to Evertse, Schlickewei and Schmidt. In contrast, algebraic actions of the much larger groupQ∗ are shown to beh...
